Hello July

Hello July

I feel I must start with my favourite subject…. I am a summer loving lizard. Now, I am not complaining Mother Nature, but please! Wood burner and an extra blanket in July?! I do concede we have had a few days of super lovely sun too, however I am fearful that is it and we are going to go straight into winter again before I have had the chance to properly defrost.

Anyway, on to other things. My beautiful nieces bought me the most thoughtful gift for my 40th birthday. A book detailing the meaning behind some of the flowers that we give others. Now, the idea of gifting flowers goes way back in time, but Floriography: the language of flowers, was a concept that the Victorians really ran with. Lists of flowers and plants with their hidden meanings were devised and published, combinations of stems could then be chosen to relay a message from the giver to the recipient. I rather like the idea that I could spin a saucy little “note” to my lover, who could then display it openly without anyone else understanding it’s hidden meaning. I have been sharing some of the meanings of the flowers that I have been using lately in my social media posts, so if you have not joined me on facebook or Instagram yet, please come and join the ranks.

I have continued working alongside Jess at Heathercroft Meadow. I particularly like the days when I hear my favourite words “I have a Stephy special” as Jess produces a stem that she knows that I will love. This month I have been delighting in the Amaranthus aka Love lies bleeding, or for a Steph-ism: dreadlocks. Steph does love a dreadlock! The dark moody colour and the movement! It is such an unruly bugger, brings disorder to every arrangement resembling octopus tentacles as it crawls and hangs amongst the other stems. It upsets some folk with it’s wayward ways, but it fits in perfectly at Floral Rebellion where we embrace the wild and unconventional and dreadlocks, both in our arrangements and on the humans!

Looking ahead, we have a very important wedding day to celebrate and a week off! Floral Rebellion Dog and I will be marauding the last week of the month, I am already chatting up Mother Nature so that we can enjoy some warmth and beautiful sunsets.

Catch you on the other side.

Steph x
